Chapter 1 Learning Objectives:
Human Trafficking, known as modern day slavery, is when a trafficker uses force, fraud, or coercion to make someone else provide services in order to make a profit. There are various forms which can include: sex trafficking, labor trafficking, organ trafficking, debt bondage, and domestic slavery.

How can someone be trafficked?
Traffickers use a variety of strategies that include, but are not limited to:
All of these factors can be a powerful tool that traffickers use to control and abuse their victims. Additionally, victims can come from a variety of backgrounds and ethnicities, which shows that anyone can be a victim. In the next section, we will take a look at Natalie’s story, as told by The Polaris Project.
Natalie’s Story:
Natalie was a young woman who was being kept in a hotel against her will and forced into prostitution. One day she decided that enough was enough, and she bravely called the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline. Although she was scared, she was able to tell Polaris enough information to get the police involved and she was rescued. She now continues to recover from her trauma, but on the bright side, she has a chance for a new and better life. She is just one example of what human trafficking can look like.

- Abuse of Power

- Paying a person in control of a victim
